[ARCHIVED] Property Tax Refund Information

Minnesota Property Tax Refund Programs
Forest Lake residents may qualify for one of Minnesota’s Property Tax Refund programs, which are designed to help homeowners—especially those on fixed incomes—manage increases in property taxes.

Regular Homestead Credit Refund
This refund is based on your household income and the property taxes you pay on your primary residence. Many homeowners qualify each year, and it can be especially helpful for seniors or residents on a fixed budget.

Special Homestead Credit Refund
You may also qualify for an additional refund if your homestead property taxes increase by more than 12% and at least $100 from one year to the next.
This program has no income limit, meaning more residents—including seniors—may be eligible when facing significant tax increases.

Why This Matters
These refunds can provide meaningful financial relief, particularly for those most impacted by rising property values and shifting tax burdens. The City encourages residents to review these programs and apply if they qualify.

How to Apply
Applications are submitted through the Minnesota Department of Revenue using Form M1PR (Property Tax Refund). Filing typically opens in mid-January each year and runs through August 15 of each year; residents may apply up to one year after the due date.

For more details, visit the Minnesota Department of Revenue website or consult a tax professional.
