Veterans Memorial Project
We are a community group who organized in 2008 under the prodding of World War II veteran El Ewert (now deceased). Our goal was and is to honor veterans either living or deceased by having a memorial site in Lakeside Memorial Park, Forest Lake. We reinstalled a bronze plaque on the rock just south of the gazebo. The plaque was made in 1977 (by the Forest Lake Chamber of Commerce) listing the names of 24 local veterans who had died during their service to our country.
Since 2009 we have a veterans pavers program to honor individual veterans by purchasing a paver which is then engraved with the veteran’s name, service, rank, unit, etc and their time of service. New pavers are dedicated at our Memorial Day Service and Veterans Day programs each year. They are then placed with the previous 370+ pavers along the sidewalk. Our next phase plan will place those in a raised area with other appropriate upright pieces honoring our military services, a centerpiece and additional large US Flag pole.
The Veterans Memorial Committee has been awarded three grants to go towards total project costs.
Clean Water Land and Legacy Grant ($96,000)
MN DEED Grant ($250,000)
Minnesota Historical Society Grant ($210,000)

Twice a year (Memorial Day and Veterans Day) the Veterans Memorial Committee dedicates new granite pavers to honor veterans. New pavers are placed along the walkway in Lakeside Memorial Park. All pavers will be incorporated into the new memorial's elevated raised platforms.
